Governmental research institutions constitute an elemental structural element of the German research and innovation system in the 20th century. The collection "Ressortforschung im 20. Jahrhundert" presents the history of selected governmental research institutions and their predecessor organizations from the First World War to the 1960s: the Physikalisch-Technischen Bundesanstalt, the Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe, the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung, the Deutschen Amtes für Material- und Warenprüfung as well as the Chemisch-Technischen Reichsanstalt.

The focus lies on the National Socialist era, as well as the manner in which these authorities dealt with their Nazi past in the early Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR. The series is aimed at readers interested in the history of National Socialism and contemporary history, the history of science and technology, historical innovation research, as well as staff members of present-day governmental research institutions.
