To what extent does a university press pay off?

Publishing director Sabrina Diab-Helmer explores this question in the August issue of DUZ's Wissenschaft & Management. Her article is part two of her DUZ article series: while the first article explained why universities should run their own press, this one addresses how a university press needs to be organisationally set up to do so.

Her main argument is that university presses cannot be measured by financial profit alone – what matters is visibility and reputation. However, achieving these goals requires the right framework conditions: a suitable organisational structure and clearly defined decision-making authority.

In her article, Diab-Helmer presents four organisational models and shows which strategic and organisational questions university presses should consider in this context. The article (pp. 52–56) is now freely available via Open Access.
